About the position

The Managing Editor, Faculty Journals at the University of Chicago Law School is responsible for leading the editorial, review, and production processes for two faculty journals: the Journal of Legal Studies and the Journal of Law and Economics. This role involves close collaboration with faculty editors, managing peer review workflows, and supervising editorial staff. The position requires a strong background in academic publishing and journal management, along with excellent communication and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare manuscripts for publication, ensuring adherence to publication guidelines and managing freelance copyeditors.
  • Maintain the journals' style sheets and negotiate editorial changes with authors.
  • Oversee the peer review process, including author and reviewer correspondence and performance reporting.
  • Manage editorial office operations, including issue preparation, copyediting, and selected marketing efforts.
  • Provide reports to editors detailing submissions statistics and trends in submission rates.
  • Conduct long-term planning for financial, style, and design aspects of the journals.
  • Support the journals' marketing efforts and prepare budgets and balance sheets.
  • Maintain relationships with outside vendors and perform quality control checking at all stages of production.
  • Edit complex manuscripts for grammar, punctuation, and clarity, creating online and print versions of publications.

Requirements

  • A college or university degree in a related field.
  • 7+ years of work experience in a related job discipline.

  • 5 years' experience copy editing scholarly books and journals.
