APG of East Central Minnesota is seeking a Managing Editor for the Mille Lacs Messenger. The Managing Editor is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the newsroom. This role will develop story and content ideas, coordinate the work of reporters and photographers, post digital content, and coordinate production schedules to ensure press times are met. The ideal candidate will work with integrity in upholding organizational values and ethics while driving readership for the paper's print and online editions. The Managing Editor will develop story or content ideas, considering reader or audience appeal. This includes monitoring and selecting news items by utilizing all news sources such as press releases, telephone contacts, radio, television, wire services, and other reporters. The role also involves coordinating the work of reporters by assigning topics, events, and stories for coverage. Additionally, the Managing Editor will write leading or policy editorials, collect and establish facts, and draw valid conclusions using intuition and experience to complement data. The position requires determining the placement of stories based on relative significance, available space, and knowledge of layout principles. The Managing Editor will mark layout sheets to indicate the position of each story and accompanying photos, write and rewrite headlines, captions, columns, articles, and stories to conform to the publication's style, editorial policy, and publishing requirements. They will also select and crop photographs and illustrative materials to conform to space and subject matter requirements, direct copy editors in modifying copy to meet space requirements, and verify facts, dates, and statistics using standard reference sources. The Managing Editor is responsible for reviewing and approving proofs submitted by production and for the layout of the paper, requiring skills in using InDesign and Photoshop.
