About the position

The Managing Editor of AKC Family Dog magazine plays a crucial role in identifying and showcasing compelling stories and characters from the dog world that align with the values of the American Kennel Club (AKC). This part-time position involves establishing a network of reliable reporters and writers, collaborating with various departments, and ensuring that all publishing deadlines are met while maintaining the magazine's integrity.

Responsibilities

• Establish a network of talented, reliable reporters and writers.
• Send assignment letters outlining story ideas, sources used, deadlines, length, fee, and kill fees.
• Work with regular columnists to find ideas for their columns.
• Collaborate with various AKC departments to identify stories.
• Find first-person contributors for the Dog's Life column based on uniqueness and writing style.
• Create themes for each issue and ensure columns, features, and images reflect the theme.
• Establish a lineup for each bi-monthly issue.
• Provide input for the creation of the page map.
• Report and write features and columns whenever necessary.
• Gather AKC news stories, items, and photos for the Paw Prints section.
• Approve all cover photos and work with a designer.
• Meet monthly and weekly deadlines as assigned.

Requirements

• Firsthand knowledge and experience with purebred dogs, AKC, and a range of dog sports is preferred.
• Proven editorial experience and ability to meet deadlines.
• Excellent communication skills and strong attention to detail.
• Intermediate-level skills in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Basic-level skills in Adobe Creative Suite.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in journalism or a related field.
