About the position

The Roy Howard Community Journalism Center at the University of Southern Mississippi is seeking a Managing Editor to spearhead the launch of this innovative initiative. This center is a collaborative effort between the university and the Scripps Howard Fund, aimed at enhancing community journalism in Southeast Mississippi. The Managing Editor will play a pivotal role in shaping the center's vision and operational strategies, ensuring that it meets its goal of producing high-impact news work while collaborating with local media outlets to elevate their coverage of community issues. The ideal candidate will be a visionary leader with a high energy level, possessing strong journalistic skills and a proven track record in leading teams within a news environment. The center is expected to be staffed with five full-time positions and over 16 students, creating a dynamic and collaborative work environment. The Managing Editor will be responsible for guiding these teams, fostering a culture of excellence, and ensuring that the center adheres to the highest professional standards in journalism. In addition to overseeing the editorial direction of the center, the Managing Editor will also engage with students and professionals, providing mentorship and support as they work together to produce quality journalism that resonates with the Southeast Mississippi community. This role is crucial in building relationships with local media outlets and understanding their goals and challenges, thereby enhancing the overall impact of community journalism in the region.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field.
  • Three to five years of media experience with increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Proven ability to lead teams and achieve high professional standards.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with students and community professionals.
