The Westerly Sun, a digital-focused daily news operation, is on the lookout for a creative and energetic Managing Editor to elevate our news-gathering operation. This role encompasses managing all aspects of our daily news coverage, which includes curating the daily story mix and overseeing a dedicated staff of three reporters, along with several freelance reporters and photographers. The Managing Editor will play a pivotal role in shaping the editorial direction of the publication, ensuring that we deliver high-quality journalism that resonates with our audience across six towns in southwestern Rhode Island and southeastern Connecticut. The ideal candidate will bring exceptional written and oral communication skills, coupled with an obsessive attention to detail and organization. Mastery of AP style is essential, as is the ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced newsroom environment. The Managing Editor will be expected to foster a team-focused atmosphere, encouraging collaboration and creativity among staff members. Our newsroom thrives on a diverse mix of news, features, entertainment, and community submissions, and the Managing Editor will be instrumental in maintaining this dynamic. In addition to editorial responsibilities, the Managing Editor will engage in page design and production using Adobe InDesign and Photoshop. This role also involves managing the photography and sports departments, as well as representing The Sun in the community. Familiarity with GMail, Google Docs, and spreadsheets is a must, as these tools are integral to our daily operations. Special duties will include overseeing team election coverage, managing special sections, and maintaining the departmental budget, ensuring that our resources are allocated effectively to support our editorial goals.
