About the position

The Managing Editor at Whitman College plays a crucial role in developing and editing content while overseeing the editorial production for various platforms, including online, print, and digital content. This position primarily caters to alumni and donors, with additional audiences including prospective students and the campus community. The Managing Editor will work under the direction of the Director of Content, serving as the managing editor for written news and feature content produced for Whitman's content channels, such as Whitman Magazine and the Whitman Newsroom. In this role, the Managing Editor will oversee the entire content creation process, which includes assigning stories and content creation to both staff and freelance writers/content producers. The position also involves managing the production of Whitman Magazine, which encompasses making writing assignments, editing content, coordinating design, and managing logistics such as scheduling, production, distribution, and budget management. Collaboration with the Director of Content is essential to set strategies around coverage of college activities and people, prioritize stories, identify appropriate print and digital channels, and create editorial calendars for both print and digital content. The Managing Editor will also be responsible for writing, editing, and posting website content, ensuring consistency in quality and voice across various platforms. Participation in campus events is encouraged to enhance cross-department relationships and gather content ideas. Additionally, the Managing Editor will hire, train, and supervise student writers, manage assignments, and coordinate relevant training. Other responsibilities include copyediting, proofreading, and fact-checking materials as assigned, along with completing other content or departmental tasks as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the managing editor for written news and feature content produced for Whitman's content channels, including Whitman Magazine and the Whitman Newsroom.

  • Manage the production of Whitman Magazine, including making magazine writing assignments, editing content, design coordination, and managing logistics (scheduling, production, distribution, and budget management).
  • Work closely with the Director of Content to set strategy around coverage of college activities and people, prioritize stories, identify appropriate print and digital channels, create editorial calendars for print and digital content, and communicate across the content team, social media, and public relations.
  • Write, edit, and post website content, including news, features, spotlights/profiles, and institutional copy, ensuring consistency in quality and voice.
  • Participate in campus events to enhance cross-department relationships and gather content ideas.
  • Hire, train, and supervise student writers, including managing assignments and coordinating relevant training.
  • Copyedit, proofread, and fact-check materials as assigned.
  • Complete other content or department tasks as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, English, journalism, or related field.
  • Five years public relations, marketing, or journalism writing experience OR any combination of experience that provides the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge, and ability required to perform the job.
