About the position

The South Florida Business Journal is seeking a Managing Editor to lead its newsroom in one of the most dynamic markets in the country. This hybrid position requires the individual to work in the office 3 to 4 days each week, overseeing the orderly flow of content across various platforms including online, mobile, email, print, and social media. As the chief operating officer of the newsroom, the Managing Editor will play a crucial role in guiding the content team, ensuring that the newsroom operates efficiently and effectively. In this hands-on management role, the Managing Editor will be responsible for inspiring and coaching reporters, bringing ideas and constant guidance to the team. The ideal candidate will possess a solid news sense, the ability to make quick judgments about story treatment, and a high level of confidence in orchestrating the simultaneous actions of editorial team members. Organization is key in this position, which reports directly to the Editor-In-Chief. The Managing Editor will also be expected to work collaboratively with editors, photographers, designers, and other team members to maximize the impact of reported stories. The role demands the ability to work under deadline pressure and to contribute to large-scale editorial projects, ensuring that the content produced meets the high standards of the publication.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the orderly flow of content across multiple platforms: online, mobile, email, print, and social media.
  • Guide the programming efforts of the content team, ensuring timely and effective story treatment.
  • Inspire and motivate the newsroom team, providing constant guidance and support.
  • Make snap judgments about the proper treatment of stories based on a solid news sense.
  • Work collaboratively with editors, photographers, designers, and others to enhance story impact.
  • Manage multiple simultaneous actions of editorial team members with a high level of organization.
  • Contribute to large-scale editorial projects and ensure they meet deadlines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of management and/or team leadership experience.
  • Experience in daily and/or weekly print operations for a business news outlet.
  • Editing experience is required.
  • Beat reporter experience is preferred.
  • Strong wordsmith with a talent for reporting and story development.
