About the position

The Manufacturing Design Engineer (MDE) at Apple is responsible for driving the development of key mechanical manufacturing processes across Apple's global supply chain. This role involves close collaboration with various teams, including Industrial Design and Product Design, to provide end-to-end manufacturing solutions. The MDE will define best-in-class processes, develop and document manufacturing procedures, and lead process development in areas such as CNC machining, surface finishing, glass processing, assembly, and painting.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the development of mechanical manufacturing processes across Apple's supply base.
  • Collaborate with Industrial Design, Product Design, and Manufacturing Design partners.
  • Define and document manufacturing processes, including parameters and consumables.
  • Work with Global Supply Managers to establish supply chain requirements.
  • Provide leadership during product production ramp and resolve engineering issues.
  • Use data analysis to inform process decisions and improvements.
  • Identify and qualify premier equipment manufacturers and suppliers.
  • Define part tolerances and specifications for product designs.
  • Lead process development in CNC machining, surface finishing, glass processing, assembly, and painting.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of full-time mechanical manufacturing experience required.
  • BS, MS, or PhD in mechanical, manufacturing, or industrial engineering preferred.
  • Demonstrate hands-on mechanical ability.
  • Excellent written and verbal interpersonal skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with highly cosmetic parts.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment of consumer electronics or consumer plastic/sheet metal products.
  • Ability to quickly learn about new processes with minimal information.
