About the position

The Mechanical Process Development Engineer (MDE) at Apple is responsible for the development and implementation of high precision mechanical fabrication processes in a high volume environment specifically for iPad products. This role involves leading experiments, assessing fabrication technologies, and ensuring supplier readiness for production. The MDE will work closely with suppliers and internal teams to drive process development and capability assessments, ensuring alignment with design specifications and manufacturing capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, propose, and lead experiments to produce timely and accurate analyses for design and supply chain decisions.
  • Assess the suitability of fabrication technology for part designs and plan validation exercises to demonstrate feasibility and manufacturing capability.
  • Review progress of development activities at supplier locations and serve as a point of escalation for critical process-related issues.
  • Act as lead engineer for new product introduction, driving process development and capability assessment activities.
  • Review part design documentation to ensure alignment with process capability and assign specific tasks to support process development.
  • Establish validation procedures for tooling acceptance into development builds and mass production.
  • Review supplier tool design, process flow, equipment selection, and proposals to ensure design compliance.
  • Work with supplier engineering teams to map out process development exercises and secure resources.
  • Assess supplier readiness for build events and production ramp, identifying potential execution issues.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience supporting new product launches from a mechanical tooling engineering or product development perspective.
  • Experience with mechanical fabricated parts, jigs, fixtures, tooling, injection molding, plastics, ceramics, and machine shop (CNC, Mills, Lathes).
  • Deep understanding of DOE, GD&T, SPC, or mechanical fabrication techniques.

Nice-to-haves

  • BS, MS, or PhD in mechanical, manufacturing, or industrial engineering.
  • Engineering management or program management background.
