About the position

As a Manufacturing Electrical Equipment Engineer III at Daimler Truck North America, you will play a crucial role in designing and implementing machine and engine controls for our assembly lines. This position involves collaboration with both local and international partners to ensure that our world-changing products are manufactured efficiently and effectively. You will be responsible for leading complex systems and projects, which includes researching vendors, creating technical specifications, and managing the procurement process. Your expertise will be essential in ensuring that engineering practices comply with government regulations and safety standards, while also implementing and supporting hardware and software for PLC, CNC, HMI, and engine controls. In this role, you will lead the controls portion of various projects, ensuring that all aspects of the project are executed according to established timelines and budgets. You will be expected to independently apply processes and standards to meet the needs of your projects, proactively manage spending plans, and identify any shortfalls in project tasks. Your ability to coach, mentor, and delegate to team members will be vital as you work with production, maintenance, product engineering, and quality teams to achieve project goals. Additionally, you will be involved in equipment controls hardware and software design reviews, support production line startups, and engineer changes required for existing lines based on process change requests. Your role will also include researching and developing standards for new controls technologies, ensuring that our manufacturing processes remain at the forefront of innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Participate and lead a team for planning and leading complex systems and projects.
  • Research vendors, create technical specifications, request quotations, and select vendors.
  • Create timelines, issue purchase requisitions, and schedule installations and tryouts.
  • Qualify and approve equipment/tooling for projects.
  • Lead the controls portion of internal or external projects.
  • Ensure engineering practices comply with government regulations and safety standards.
  • Implement and support hardware and software for PLC, CNC, HMI, and engine controls.
  • Implement and support device level networks and manufacturing monitoring systems.
  • Independently apply processes and standards to project needs and progress.
  • Manage funding planning and tracking of complex projects based on Daimler standard project funding principles.
  • Identify shortfalls in projects and develop countermeasures and resolutions.
  • Utilize appropriate project management tools for projects and tasks.
  • Lead project teams with production, maintenance, product engineering, quality, and suppliers.
  • Promote continuous improvements and implement effective solutions.
  • Monitor work progress and resolve problems to ensure timely project completion.
  • Provide management with regular reports and presentations on project work plans and status.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, or Mechatronics Engineering.
  • At least 7 years of experience in controls engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years of PLC programming experience, specifically with Siemens.
  • Minimum of 5 years of HMI development experience, specifically with HMI PRO, WinCC Flex, and TIA Portal.
  • At least 5 years of experience using Siemens controls.
  • Experience in manufacturing controls equipment hardware and software design practices and standards.
  • At least 5 years of experience in MES systems (e.g., SISAM).
  • At least 5 years of experience in FIS systems (e.g., PRISMA).
  • At least 5 years of experience using PC hardware and Microsoft Windows in a networked plant floor environment.
  • Experience in a project lead role.
  • Ability to travel, including international travel (~15%).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and able to articulate technical information in written and oral communication.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with additional programming languages or software related to controls engineering.
  • Familiarity with advanced manufacturing technologies and practices.
  • Experience in a leadership role within a manufacturing environment.
