About the position

Our client in Dearborn, MI is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer General for a contract position. The role involves developing assembly process systems that align with standard Bill of Process strategies through various phases including enquiry, procurement, simultaneous engineering, build, installation, and commissioning. The engineer will work closely with the project team assigned to the component/process, which includes controls, productivity, layout, IT, material handling, and suppliers, to develop a comprehensive assembly process. This includes designing auto stations and creating workstation and material flow layouts. In addition to process development, the Manufacturing Engineer will be responsible for resolving manufacturing concerns and feasibility issues within the Component Program Module Team (CPMT). This involves reviewing product drawings, identifying manufacturing gaps, and communicating these to the product development team. The engineer will also drive the Investment Efficiency process in collaboration with Product Development and suppliers, ensuring that quality documentation such as SCCAF, Process Failure Mode & Effects Analysis (PFMEA), and Control Plans (DCP) are developed and maintained. The role requires assuming timing and financial responsibility for respective program content, leading equipment procurement, and overseeing Machine Acceptance processes, which include equipment verification and issue resolution. The engineer will also be expected to develop Make Like Production (MLP) plans, coordinate tryout parts, and support Virtual Manufacturing Builds/MA Event input. Building and maintaining process documentation, collaborating with plant personnel for equipment installations, and implementing continuous improvements are also key responsibilities. Flexibility in work location and the ability to travel and work various shifts, including weekends and holidays, is required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop assembly process systems aligned to standard Bill of Process strategies through enquiry, procurement, simultaneous engineering, build, installation, and commissioning phases.
  • Work with project team assigned to the component/process to develop full assembly process including auto station designs and workstation & material flow layouts.
  • Resolve manufacturing concerns and feasibility issues within the Component Program Module Team (CPMT) by reviewing product drawings and communicating gaps to the product development team.
  • Drive Investment Efficiency process with Product Development and suppliers.
  • Develop quality documentation such as SCCAF, Process Failure Mode & Effects Analysis (PFMEA), and Control Plans (DCP).
  • Assume timing and financial responsibility for respective program content.
  • Responsible for equipment procurement and lead Machine Acceptance (equipment verification, MIDAS) and issue resolution.
  • Develop Make Like Production (MLP) plan, tryout part coordination and runoff strategy.
  • Participate in Virtual Manufacturing Builds/MA Event input & support including deviation process & open issue resolution.
  • Build and maintain process documentation (e.g. process illustrations, tool layouts, cycle charts, etc.).
  • Collaborate with plant personnel and skilled trades to plan equipment installations and development prove out plans to ensure equipment is ready for production.
  • Identify root causes and develop and implement ICA/PCA solutions using problem-solving skills and error proofing devices.
  • Use machining monitoring data and system flow analysis to identify assembly system bottlenecks and develop reaction plans to address them.
  • Incorporate continuous improvements utilizing Continuous Improvement / Lessons Learned, Deviation and Decision Record Process.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
  • Knowledge of assembly machines, fixtures, tools & gauges, preferably in Automotive/Powertrain Manufacturing Engineering with strong mechanical engineering aptitude.
  • Process flow/process development experience.
  • GD&T and print reading skills.
  • 2 or more years experience in Manufacturing Engineering.
  • Self-starting, self-motivated with very good influential, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to handle technical aspects of the position.

Nice-to-haves

  • Masters degree in Engineering.
  • Familiarity with statistical software: Minitab, Q-DAS.
