The Manufacturing Engineer - Grind will prepare detailed manufacturing instructions and programming data to produce machined parts and sub-assemblies to meet engineering drawings and specifications. This role involves determining manufacturing procedures and operation sequencing, establishing tooling, gauging, and machine requirements to fabricate parts and sub-assemblies for various products. The engineer will also prepare detailed operation sheets and N/C programs, estimate setup and run hours for production parts, and assist the Group Leader in preparing cost estimates for new proposals. Additionally, the engineer may technically guide or train Associate Manufacturing Engineers, with a broad base of knowledge in external & internal grinding being a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Spend time in the production shops solving problems and improving processes associated with the parts he/she is responsible for.
  • Support timely and efficient processing of parts through the fabrication area by generating operation sheets and manufacturing procedures on assigned parts.
  • Assure compatibility of engineering drawings and specifications with manufacturing and fabrication capabilities by reviewing drawings and making suggestions for changes and revisions to enhance producibility.
  • Provide accurate and usable N/C programming tapes by converting detailed N/C program outlines into specific coded machine instructions and assist machine operators with program prove-out.
  • Coordinate with various departments and team members to assure the most effective design and use of manufacturing facilities and processes.
  • Establish standard times for setup and run of each operation on assigned parts.
  • Originate and/or make studies directed towards more efficient manufacturing of parts, including recommendations for changes in equipment, processes, methods, materials, and designs.
  • Follow up jobs during the initial stage of manufacturing to ensure processing and effect revisions to tooling and processing as necessary.
  • Consult with the Manufacturing Engineering Group Leader in resolving processing details on more complex parts.
  • Prepare rework operation sheets for salvage of discrepant parts and follow through with corrective action to reduce the possibility of reoccurrence of discrepant parts.
  • Establish tooling, gaging, and fixture concepts, review and approve tool, gaging, and fixture design drawings, and estimate hours required to design and fabricate tools and fixtures.
  • Work with Moog vendors to coordinate operation sheets containing outside and inside operations.
  • Aid in producing N/C programs and assist the Group Leader on cost estimating efforts on new proposals.
  • Assure the acceptance and practice of fundamental safety principles by employees and management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or an Associate’s degree and minimum of 6 years relevant professional experience or a High School diploma and minimum of 8 years relevant professional experience.
  • 3+ years’ grinding ID/OD experience.
  • Experience in close tolerance work; working in .0005” or less.
  • Hands-on experience setting up and operating machines.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills to work effectively with a variety of people and teams.
