About the position

The Manufacturing Engineer I/II - Machining at Rocket Lab is responsible for the machining development of new products and revisions related to rocket engines. This role involves contributing to design reviews, selecting and procuring machine shop equipment, developing in-house machining capabilities, and implementing tooling and equipment for production. The engineer will also focus on continuous improvement and cost reduction projects while mentoring less experienced engineers and machinists.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to design reviews as an expert in design for manufacture and machining.
  • Select, procure, and install machine shop equipment, developing maintenance and calibration plans.
  • Develop machining capability in-house for Archimedes components and implement rapid iterations.
  • Design, develop, and implement tooling and equipment for production to improve quality, delivery, and cost performance.
  • Responsible for continuous improvement and cost reduction projects in the fabrication department.
  • Collaborate with other Rocket Lab machine shops for alignment and support.
  • Develop and mentor less experienced engineers and machinists.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, or other engineering degree for Manufacturing Engineer I.
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, aerospace, manufacturing engineering, or equivalent for Manufacturing Engineer II.
  • 2+ years of machine shop experience for Manufacturing Engineer II.
  • Ability to rapidly iterate NX CAM programs and operate 5-axis CNC equipment for Manufacturing Engineer II.
  • Well versed in GD&T and inspection methods for Manufacturing Engineer II.

Nice-to-haves

  • Working experience with capacity modeling, process mapping, Lean/Six Sigma, and value stream mapping.
  • 5+ years of machine shop experience.
  • Experience with 3D CAD software and tooling design.
  • Experience machining turbomachinery and combustion device components.
  • Familiarity with post processing methods, AM, and welding.
