About the position

The Manufacturing Engineer II - Composite Fab & Assembly at Blue Origin plays a crucial role in the New Shepard program, focusing on the development and manufacturing of reusable spaceflight systems. This position involves collaborating with engineering design, production, and leadership to enhance manufacturing processes, ensuring quality and efficiency in the fabrication of composite parts. The engineer will lead efforts in creating work instructions, conducting analyses, and managing hardware configurations to support safe human spaceflight.

Responsibilities

  • Develop manufacturing work instructions for composites fabrication, inspection, trimming, and assembly.
  • Manage quality, build sequence, and schedule of hardware throughout the manufacturing process.
  • Perform engineering drawing review and provide final approval for manufacturing.
  • Define and support repair and rework activities.
  • Conduct root cause analyses for non-conformances and implement corrective actions.
  • Craft accurate material handling and packaging to protect hardware.
  • Manage hardware configuration and maintain pedigree.
  • Prioritize hardware procurement and fabrication, communicating these priorities to the team.
  • Maintain extreme customer focus with strong verbal and written communication.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in mechanical, aerospace, or industrial engineering or other relevant field.
  • Direct manufacturing and manufacturing engineering experience.
  • Hardware manufacturing experience with composite parts.
  • Understanding of engineering fundamentals for mechanical design and manufacturing, including GD&T.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams across large distances.
  • Project management skills to track, manage, and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Strong written, personal, technical, and software skills (CAD, Scheduling, Issue Tracking, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).
  • Ability to earn trust and maintain positive professional relationships.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with automated fiber placement, non-destructive testing, and trimming of composite parts.
  • Experience with aircraft, launch vehicle, spacecraft, or satellite development, production, or operations.
  • Proficient in writing work instructions at a high pace.
  • Self-directed with the ability to balance several tasks at once.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD programs (Creo Pro/E & CATIA preferred).
