About the position

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! We are a diverse team of collaborators, doers, and problem-solvers who are relentlessly committed to a culture of safety. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your commitment and detailed attention toward safe and repeatable space flight. Join us in lowering the cost of access to space and enabling Blue Origin's vision of millions of people living and working in space to benefit Earth. As part of a small, passionate, and accomplished team of experts, you will be responsible for developing turbomachinery components and assembly processes for liquid propellant rocket engines. As a Manufacturing Engineer, you will translate engineering intent, drawings, and configurations into fully functional hardware ready for test, qualification, and flight. Throughout the manufacturing process, you will also identify, develop, and deploy methods to improve quality, reduce cost, and optimize build sequences and schedules. As an integral member of the team, you will conduct DFMA and PFMEA studies to strengthen the feedback loop between design, build, and test and accelerate the pace of rocket engine development. We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities

  • Develop manufacturing work instructions to clearly define manufacturing processes including inspection, fabrication, assembly, test, disassembly, and refurbishment
  • Continuously improve manufacturing processes through defect elimination and cycle time reduction
  • Closely manage cost, quality, build sequence, and schedule of hardware throughout the entire manufacturing process
  • Perform engineering drawing review and provide final approval for manufacturing
  • Develop process control measures and evaluation through statistical analysis
  • Define and support repair and rework activities
  • Design, procure, install, and integrate custom manufacturing equipment
  • Interface with external suppliers and manufacturing partners to ensure that hardware and equipment are manufactured, processed, packaged, and delivered properly, on time, and budget
  • Perform capacity analysis for manufacturing equipment and processes
  • Perform root cause analyses when non-conformances and escapes are identified and deploy corrective actions
  • Develop proper material handling and packaging to protect hardware throughout the build and test process
  • Manage hardware configuration and maintain pedigree throughout the entire build and test process

Requirements

  • 3+ years of applicable experience
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering (or relevant field) from an accredited program
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic team environment supporting constantly evolving design iterations
  • Experience in turbomachinery component processing and assembly
  • Familiarity with lean systems and methodologies
  • Ability to interpret engineering models, drawings, specifications, written work instructions, and test procedures
  • Ability to communicate clearly and appropriately at all levels of the organization (vertically and horizontally)
  • Exceptional organizational, analytical, and project management skills, particularly regarding attention to detail
  • Hands-on experience in hardware processing (i.e. casting, forging, additive, welding, machining, cleaning, non-destructive testing, tight tolerance assembly, leak testing, final acceptance)
