About the position

The Manufacturing Engineer position at 3M offers a unique opportunity to support key products within the building and construction markets. This role is pivotal in overseeing the entire lifecycle of a product platform, from raw materials to finished goods. The Manufacturing Engineer will be expected to drive results in Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), Quality, Service, and Cost performance, ensuring that the products meet the high standards set by 3M. This position is designed for individuals who are eager to collaborate with a diverse team of innovative thinkers and contribute to the continuous improvement of manufacturing processes. In this role, the Manufacturing Engineer will identify and implement programs aimed at reducing unit costs while simultaneously improving quality and productivity. The engineer will optimize manufacturing processes and provide essential technical support to ensure smooth operations. A significant part of the job involves developing and maintaining production standards, which are crucial for the efficiency and effectiveness of manufacturing operations. The Manufacturing Engineer will also play a key role in the development of new products and processes, contributing to business growth and productivity targets. This includes responsibilities such as scale-up, equipment qualification, and process validation. Utilizing Lean and Six Sigma methodologies, the engineer will work to improve processes and minimize waste, ensuring that the manufacturing operations are both efficient and sustainable. Additionally, the role requires active participation in EHS committees and programs, focusing on improving the safety and health of the manufacturing environment. The Manufacturing Engineer will also be responsible for developing standard work procedures to support process improvements and will train and develop the workforce as necessary to advance operational capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and implement programs that reduce unit costs
  • Identify and implement programs that improve quality and productivity
  • Optimize manufacturing processes and provide technical support for manufacturing
  • Develop and maintain Production Standards
  • Participate in the development of new products and processes to promote business growth and productivity targets
  • Utilize Lean/Six Sigma Manufacturing Methods to improve processes and reduce waste
  • Drive root cause identification and resolution of process and product upsets
  • Monitor and improve processes using Statistics and SPC
  • Improve Environmental, Health, and Safety of the manufacturing operation through leadership of EHS improvement projects
  • Participate in EHS Committees and Programs
  • Develop Standard Work Procedures in support of process improvements and train workforce as needed

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a science or engineering discipline from an accredited institution
  • Previous combined engineering and/or manufacturing experience in a private, public, government or military environment
  • Solid analytical and statistical skills
  • Solid interpersonal and communication skills, both written & oral

Nice-to-haves

  • Cross functional team contributions and leadership skills
  • Experience with leading DMAIC Six Sigma projects - Green Belt or Black Belt Certified
  • Experience with developing and implementing Lean Systems and Standard Work
  • 2+ years Engineering or Manufacturing experience
