About the position

The Manufacturing Engineer (Sr. Melting) at SCHOTT North America, Inc. is responsible for evaluating, developing, and improving manufacturing methods, particularly in glass melting processes. This role involves applying statistical methods to enhance production efficiency, ensuring adherence to safety and quality standards, and collaborating with various departments to implement effective manufacturing solutions. The engineer will also focus on continuous improvement initiatives and cost-saving measures to optimize production workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Observes all safety, hazardous waste and security procedures.
  • Evaluates, develops and improves existing and new manufacturing methods.
  • Applies statistical methods to estimate future manufacturing requirements and continuously improves production processes.
  • Identifies root causes and implements a deviation management system for issue resolution.
  • Adapts to frequent changes in the work environment, delays, and unexpected events.
  • Analyzes and plans workforce utilization, space requirements, and workflow for maximum efficiency using LEAN and 6S principles.
  • Works with Production, Quality, and Engineering departments to implement in-process yield measurement systems.
  • Uses data collected to develop corrective actions to improve yield over time.
  • Identifies production line capacity and makes manpower and machine recommendations.
  • Communicates work instructions and process information clearly to work crews.
  • Develops and implements cost-saving measures to conserve organizational resources.
  • Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner by gathering and analyzing information skillfully.
  • Confers with management and engineering regarding manufacturing capabilities and production schedules.
  • Maintains flexibility regarding hours of work depending on production needs.
  • Utilizes structured methods (e.g., PDCA and DMAIC) for continuous improvement activities.
  • Monitors all aspects of glass quality to continuously improve production results.
  • Provides secondary support for machinery and equipment integration into production.

Requirements

  • BS Degree in Industrial, Manufacturing or Mechanical Engineering.
  • 8 - 10 years experience in production or industrial manufacturing.
  • Glass melting experience is a plus, but not required.
  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt preferred.
  • Knowledge of SAP and MS Office.
  • Computer proficiency in data analysis and business management software including SQL, DMAIC, Tableau, and Visual Basic.
