About the position

The Manufacturing Engineer - Tool & Die position focuses on the execution of the Vendor Tooling Procurement Process, particularly in the area of Assembly Tooling and Automation. This role involves early on-boarding of components that require feasibility assessments by tool shops, ensuring effective sourcing approaches by validating tool shop capabilities, and identifying capable tool shops to ensure competitive bidding. Transparency in the process is maintained through the use of Tool Break Down Sheets, and timely negotiations are finalized to support Program Finance Freeze requirements. In this role, the engineer will develop tool sourcing strategies in collaboration with the Purchasing matched pair, ensuring successful implementation of these strategies. They will coordinate GPDS (Global Product Development System) Part Pedigree Deliverables for all build events and ensure that production tool timing and plans align with homeline delivery requirements for tooling. The engineer will also be responsible for developing analytical tools and strategies aimed at achieving Best in Class (BIC) tool performance and timing, utilizing various metrics such as Shop Performance Analytics, Benchmarking, and Market Intelligence. The Manufacturing Engineer will act as the single point of contact for technical issues related to suppliers and engineering on global vehicle programs for assigned commodities. They will resolve emerging issues by engaging with various stakeholders, including engineering, program management, and suppliers, to drive GPDS timing deliverables. Building and managing positive relationships with the supply base and plant personnel is crucial, as the engineer must foster a partnership approach, maintain accountability, and ensure ethical business operations to maximize relationship value.

Responsibilities

  • Execute the Vendor Tooling Procurement Process for Assembly Tooling and Automation.
  • Develop tool sourcing strategies in conjunction with the Purchasing matched pair.
  • Coordinate GPDS Part Pedigree Deliverables for all build events.
  • Ensure production tool timing and plans meet homeline delivery requirements.
  • Develop analytical tools and strategies for Best in Class tool performance and timing.
  • Manage cost status and targets in cooperation with GVT buyers and other stakeholders.
  • Act as the single point of contact for technical issues related to suppliers and engineering.
  • Resolve emerging issues by engaging with engineering, program, and suppliers to drive GPDS timing deliverables.
  • Manage relationships with the supply base and plant personnel, ensuring ethical business operations.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in a tool-related field (tool construction, assembly integration, manufacturing feasibility, processing, cost estimating).
  • Experience with tooling commodity and corporate business acumen.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and foster a positive team environment.
  • Strong technical competency and a can-do attitude.
  • Impeccable communication and strong negotiation skills.
  • High degree of emotional intelligence and resilience to manage multiple critical assignments.

Nice-to-haves

  • Tool making (construction/design) experience either at tool shop level or Tier 1.
  • Experience in costing/estimating tools at tool shop level or Tier 1.
  • Launch or production experience on tools.
  • Background as a tool maker who transitioned into design or program management.
