About the position

Teledyne Technologies Incorporated is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to join the Teledyne FLIR Defense team in Billerica, MA. This role is pivotal in supporting the production of the Integrated Dewar Cooler Assembly (IDCA). The Manufacturing Engineer will report directly to the Operations Manager and will work closely with the Engineering Lead to enhance manufacturing processes, improve product design, and facilitate new product introductions. In this position, the Manufacturing Engineer will be responsible for providing hands-on support on the production floor, particularly with complex electro-mechanical assemblies. This includes troubleshooting technical issues and conducting failure analyses to ensure high-quality production standards. The role also involves reviewing product flow and processes to identify areas for improvement, thereby enhancing manufacturability and operational efficiency. The Manufacturing Engineer will participate in drafting, reviewing, and approving Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) for supported products. Utilizing Root Cause Analysis, the engineer will identify manufacturing and design issues, implementing effective solutions to mitigate these challenges. Additionally, the role requires the development of fixturing concepts to ensure the testability of both existing and future products, as well as involvement in continuous improvement projects aimed at reducing lead times and increasing first-pass yield. Collaboration with design teams is essential, as the Manufacturing Engineer will assist in transitioning products from design to production, ensuring that design for manufacturability principles are adhered to. The engineer will also provide support to vendors to meet supplier quality requirements and coordinate necessary design changes. Responsibilities

  • Assist the Operations Manager and Engineering Lead with daily production floor support on complex electro-mechanical assemblies, providing hands-on troubleshooting and technical failure analysis.
  • Review product flow and processes to develop changes and improve manufacturability.
  • Participate in the drafting, review, and approval of all Engineering Change Orders (ECO's) for products being supported.
  • Utilize Root Cause Analysis to identify manufacturing and design issues, and implement solutions.
  • Provide fixturing concepts to ensure testability of all existing and future products.
  • Work on continuous improvement projects to improve lead times, ease of manufacturing, and first pass yield.
  • Work on sustaining engineering projects through design, validation testing, and implementation.
  • Assist with new product design and qualification testing, analyze mechanical design issues and offer solutions to mechanical problems.
  • Assist in the transition of products from Design to Production ensuring Design for Manufacturability is considered.
  • Provide engineering support to vendors to ensure supplier quality requirements are met and coordinate changes to existing designs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 3-5+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering or related field, preferably in a high-tech or precision manufacturing environment.
  • Fluent in creating 3D models and 2D drawings using SolidWorks or an equivalent CAD tool.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with the manufacturing and assembly of Cryogenic Coolers, Integrated Dewar Cooler Assembly (IDCA) is highly desired.
  • Experience with optical-based products, portable instruments and/or infrared technology.
  • Hands-on skills on Soldering, assembly, and troubleshooting of electrical systems.
  • JIRA and SAP experience.
  • Lean and Six Sigma experience.
