About the position

The Manufacturing Engineer at A. O. Smith Corporation plays a crucial role in enhancing manufacturing processes within a high-volume assembly plant. This position focuses on evaluating and improving production procedures, managing capital investment projects, and ensuring efficient workflow through effective process documentation and training coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and track capital investment budgets for assigned projects
  • Track, manage, and communicate the capital equipment timing plan and open issues to the program team
  • Develop all RFQs and Equipment Specifications for Capital and Tooling Requirements, including all contract services, prior to SOP
  • Act as the main interface with machining, automation, and capital equipment vendors
  • Oversee all production processes development and final approvals including work cell layout, ergonomic workstation design, and line balancing
  • Develop Prototype and Production Process Documentation through SOP +90 days including: Process Flow, Cycle Time Analysis, PFMEA, and Work Instructions
  • Own error & mistake proofing devices & processes
  • Manage initial plant floor layout & PFEP, including material flow and storage
  • Procure and install all line side material presentation and handling devices
  • Transfer all equipment and process documentation to the Production Plant prior to SOP including all OEM Equipment Documentation
  • Coordinate initial training for new equipment or process changes
  • Review module assembly drawings & CAD Models for manufacturability
  • Determine cost and timing impacts for engineering changes affecting the assembly process
  • Support Engineering Cost Estimator with quoted assumptions for the assembly process
  • Provide guidance in equipment and capital selection to the Purchasing Dept.
  • Provide mechanical engineering expertise for assembly systems, production tooling, and packaging design
  • Drive lean concepts (5S, Kanban, Visual Factory, TPM etc.)
  • Implement process improvements to enhance overall efficiencies, including automation
  • Setup and troubleshoot plastic welding processes

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering preferred; Associate's Degree in Engineering required
  • 3+ years manufacturing engineering experience in a high-volume assembly environment
  • Strong skills in AutoCAD a plus (floor layouts)
  • SolidWorks experience a plus (fixture design)
  • Strong knowledge of Industrial Safety Standards and requirements
  • Proven track record rebalancing assembly processes based on takt times
  • Experience setting up routings and BOMs
  • Ability to analyze current business labor efficiencies, capital investments and other historical data to calculate product cost
  • Self-motivator who works with minimal direction
