About the position

The Manufacturing Engineer position at Progress Rail involves assisting in the design of tooling and equipment, as well as planning the manufacturing process for parts and assemblies in the locomotive department. This role requires independent judgment and decision-making within established practices and policies, contributing to the overall efficiency and quality of manufacturing operations.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes process materials or product designs for the best methods of manufacture.
  • Specifies tools, equipment and process to produce a part or assembly or evaluate processes in locomotive area.
  • Assists in the design and building of tools and equipment or recommends improvements to existing processes.
  • Assists in developing training materials, work instructions, quality manuals, and other documentation to train employees on equipment and best practices.
  • Investigates equipment and process failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation and to make recommendations for improvement.
  • Works with design engineering and quality assurance to develop procedures to ensure high quality parts meet customer expectations.
  • Procures all required items (gauges, stands, tools, cabinets, hoists, etc.) for operations.
  • Assists in continuous improvement efforts through joint operations, engineering, and maintenance teams; develops long-range plans for improvements of processes and manufacturing activities.
  • Performs additional job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering field (e.g., mechanical, electrical, software, etc.). Will consider an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Demonstrated analytical ability where problems are complex.
  • Well developed oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read, understand, and create technical prints.
  • Understanding of manufacturing and tooling processes.
  • Understanding of LEAN manufacturing principles preferred.
  • Interpersonal skills with ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong proficiency with MS Office tools (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
