About the position

At Olympic Steel, the Manufacturing Engineer plays a crucial role in determining the most cost-effective methods to utilize essential production factors such as people, equipment, materials, information, and energy to manufacture products. This position is primarily focused on enhancing productivity through the management of process improvements, employing methodologies such as Lean Manufacturing, Statistical Process Control (SPC), and Six Sigma. The Manufacturing Engineer will collaborate with vendors, customers, and internal teams to design or enhance systems related to scheduling, capacity planning, production speed, and the implementation of project equipment. The role requires a proactive approach to identifying areas for improvement and implementing solutions that drive efficiency and quality in manufacturing processes. The Manufacturing Engineer will also be responsible for creating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions, ensuring that all processes are documented and followed correctly. Excellent interpersonal communication skills are essential, as the Engineer will facilitate training sessions and develop documentation to support the workforce. In addition to technical skills, the Manufacturing Engineer must possess strong organizational, planning, and multitasking abilities to manage various projects simultaneously. Familiarity with industry standards such as ISO 9001, ISO 14000, and IATF 16949 is also beneficial, as it ensures compliance with quality management systems and environmental standards. Responsibilities

  • Determine cost-effective production methods using basic factors of production.
  • Increase productivity through management of process improvements using Lean Manufacturing, SPC, or Six Sigma methods.
  • Collaborate with vendors, customers, and employees to design or improve systems for scheduling and capacity planning.
  • Implement project equipment effectively to enhance production speed.
  • Create Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions for manufacturing processes.
  • Facilitate training sessions and develop documentation for employees.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field.
  • Formal Lean training (Six Sigma, Kaizen, 5S, etc.) required; Six Sigma Green Belt/Black Belt is a plus.
  • 2+ years of experience in a similar role within the manufacturing industry; steel experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with lasers, press brakes, machining centers, plasma, and welding is preferred.
  • Knowledge in materials control, production control, and quality control is preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, and ERP systems.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and multitasking skills.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001, ISO 14000, and IATF 16949.
