About the position

The Manufacturing Equipment Engineer at Tesla, Inc. is responsible for supporting the ramp-up of factory operations and contributing to the design of robust and stable manufacturing equipment. This role involves collaboration with Quality and Production teams to transition new products from design through prototype development to full production. The engineer will work on various automation systems, ensuring safety standards are met and implementing reliable safety systems for high-volume manufacturing equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Support the ramp of the factory and contribute to the design of robust and stable equipment.
  • Work closely with Quality and Production to transition new products from design to full production.
  • Ramp manufacturing lines including mechanical automation equipment, robots, and electromechanical systems.
  • Program state machines for complex processes involving multi-station parallel processing and automation.
  • Coordinate safety standards and implement controls for safeguarding manufacturing equipment.
  • Define and coordinate a methodology for maintaining PLC code structure and backups.
  • Design fault-tolerant systems with error handling and recovery capabilities.
  • Train technicians on the maintenance and repair of control systems.
  • Coordinate electrical cabinet builds, field wiring, and pneumatic and fluid plumbing.
  • Interface with the Tesla Manufacturing Execution System (MES) to communicate product acceptability and machine status.
  • Spearhead continuous improvement efforts to enhance manufacturing reliability and efficiency.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field with two years of experience in mechanical or manufacturing controls engineering.
  • Alternatively, a Master's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field with relevant academic background or internship experience.
  • Experience with Beckhoff, Omron, Siemens, B&R, or Mitsubishi systems.
  • Familiarity with Safety PLCs including Allen Bradley, Omron, Pilz, Siemens, Beckhoff, or B&R.
  • Experience with Human Machine Interface (HMI) systems such as AB Panelview, Ignition, TIA/WinCC, or B&R.
  • Knowledge of field bus networks including EtherCAT, ProfiNet, ProfiBud, Modbus, Powerlink, or RS232.
  • Experience with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES).
  • Ability to select and integrate circuit protectors, wire and cable, sensors, safety hardware, PLC hardware, remote I/O, VFD, or servo systems.
