About the position

The Manufacturing Performance Engineer (PVC/Extrusion) at Oldcastle Infrastructure plays a pivotal role in enhancing manufacturing processes and driving operational excellence. This position is integral to the company's commitment to delivering high-quality PVC products while maintaining a focus on safety and sustainability. The Performance Lead will collaborate closely with operations and sales teams to identify and implement lean process improvements and strategic capital investments that address operational challenges and leverage opportunities for growth. In this role, the engineer will oversee the implementation of lean manufacturing principles and practices at the facility. This includes planning and coordinating process improvement initiatives, facilitating 5S events, and providing training and mentorship to plant-level teams. The engineer will also be responsible for developing and managing capital projects, ensuring they are completed on time and within budget while meeting performance objectives. This involves defining project scopes, preparing capital expenditure requests, and managing all phases of project execution from design to commissioning. The Performance Engineer will also stay informed about new technologies and industry trends, making recommendations for their application to enhance profitability and competitiveness. By providing technical support and direction for process improvements and maintenance activities, the engineer will contribute to the overall success of the manufacturing operations, ensuring that the company remains a trusted partner in the PVC pipe industry.

Responsibilities

  • Help identify opportunities for significant improvement in manufacturing operations.
  • Work extensively with operations and/or sales teams to understand opportunities to apply lean process improvement initiatives and/or capital investment to improve profitability and competitive advantage.
  • Translate operational needs into project requirements and specifications.
  • Solicit proposals from vendors/contractors to address project requirements and specifications as appropriate.
  • Evaluate proposals received together with operations and/or sales teams.
  • Develop and implement project analysis techniques and processes to select opportunities that optimize profit impact, time to complete, complexity, risk, and cost to implement.
  • Provide planning, training, mentoring, and oversight to plant level teams executing lean process improvement activities.
  • Participate and lead activities/events as required.
  • Provide training on 5S and lean tools and techniques as required.
  • Provide follow up and tracking to ensure identified improvement activities are completed as planned.
  • Define and document project scope and cost estimate.
  • Assist in preparing request for capital expenditure (CAPEX) and securing its approval.
  • Manage project design, permitting, procurement, equipment fabrication, construction and equipment installation, testing, start-up, commissioning and training.
  • Ensure assigned projects are completed on schedule and on budget.
  • Ensure the completed project attains the performance objectives defined by the approved scope and specifications.
  • Stay abreast of new technology and make recommendations for its application to the business's operations to improve profitability and competitiveness.
  • Provide technical support and direction, as assigned, to address specific process/equipment improvement opportunities/issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience in manufacturing process improvement, particularly in a PVC or extrusion environment.
  • Strong understanding of lean manufacturing principles and practices.
  • Proven project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to analyze data and make data-driven decisions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with capital project management in a manufacturing setting.
