About the position

The Manufacturing/Process Engineer will play a crucial role in evaluating both new and existing processes within the production environment. The primary objective is to implement systems that enhance efficiency, reduce costs, improve quality, and increase throughput by applying sound Process Engineering principles. This position requires a proactive approach to identifying areas for improvement and leading initiatives that drive operational excellence. In this role, the engineer will initiate, champion, and lead various process improvement projects. This includes estimating manufacturing and cost standards for new or modified products, assessing the adequacy and suitability of manufacturing equipment, and conducting capability and time studies. The engineer will also be responsible for implementing lean principles in production, including the 5S methodology, to streamline operations and enhance productivity. Documentation is a key aspect of this position, as the engineer will need to create work instructions, process flow charts, and other relevant materials. Additionally, the engineer will conduct training sessions for manufacturing personnel on continuous improvement tools, techniques, and programs, ensuring that the team is well-equipped to embrace a culture of ongoing improvement. The Manufacturing/Process Engineer will also drive programs aimed at improving environmental and safety performance, ensuring compliance with all Smiths Connectors EHS programs, policies, procedures, and training requirements. Furthermore, the engineer will work on developing applications for new technology and automation in production, contributing to the overall advancement of manufacturing processes.

Responsibilities

  • Initiate, champion, lead and implement process improvement projects.
  • Estimate manufacturing and cost standards for new or modified products.
  • Assess manufacturing equipment for adequacy and suitability.
  • Conduct capability and time studies.
  • Implement lean principles in production including 5S.
  • Document work instructions, process flow charts, etc.
  • Conduct training to Manufacturing personnel on continuous improvement tools, techniques, and programs.
  • Drive programs and complete projects to improve environmental and safety performance.
  • Work to develop uses for new technology and automation in production.
  • Ensure compliance and participation in all Smiths Connectors EHS programs, policies, procedures and training requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering required; BSME or BSEE preferred.
  • 5+ years of process improvement/quality control in product manufacturing.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, AS9100 structure and requirements.
  • Ability to resolve complex manufacturing-related problems.
  • Proficiency with tools such as 5S, PFMEA, DMAIC, Control Plans, DOE, and PPAP.
  • Experience in establishing labor rates/standards and reviewing performance to these standards.
  • Proficiency in software tools including Word, Excel, and Solid Works.
  • Experience with CAD programs is a plus.
  • Ability to prepare layouts of plant facilities to optimize utilization and product flow.
  • Robotics experience preferred, but not required.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively interact with all levels of staff.
