About the position

The Manufacturing Scientist role at Kelly Services involves supporting the manufacturing team as a technical advisor and operator. The primary focus is on adapting processes from research and development to large-scale manufacturing while ensuring compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and quality standards. The position also includes responsibilities in process optimization, production scheduling, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Support the manufacturing team as a technical advisor and operator.
  • Adapt processes from R&D scale to final manufacturing scale.
  • Drive and contribute to continual improvement initiatives.
  • Provide input to production scheduling.
  • Practice and promote safe work habits and adhere to safety procedures.
  • Demonstrate understanding of Good Manufacturing Practice and adhere to quality standards.
  • Exhibit proficiency in understanding concepts and scale-up requirements for departmental disciplines.
  • Transfer processes to manufacturing, including large-scale adaptations.
  • Provide suggestions for process optimization and efficiency.
  • Perform Facility Fit analysis and collaborate with engineering for new production equipment sourcing.
  • Order appropriate raw materials for manufacturing processes.
  • Author, review, and approve technical documentation such as process descriptions and batch records.
  • Support ongoing manufacturing campaigns through data trending analysis and troubleshooting.
  • Interface with Quality Assurance for material specifications and change requests.
  • Supervise Manufacturing Sciences personnel and coordinate production campaigns.
  • Conduct performance reviews and provide input for hiring new manufacturing scientists.
  • Engage in continuous improvement initiatives with production managers.
  • Train new staff in scientific concepts, technical operations, safety, and GMP.

Requirements

  • B.S. in life science or related degree required, with laboratory experience preferred.
  • 4 - 10 years of experience in GMP production or an advanced degree (MS or PhD) with 2 - 5 years of experience in GMP production.
  • More than 4 years of experience as a technical SME for manufacturing scale in a similar role.
  • Proven track record of supervising a group of 4+ employees in a biologics technical SME production environment.
  • Experience in early-phase and late-phase technical transfer and scale-up required.
  • Experience authoring GMP documentation required.
  • Proficient technical writing skills required.
  • Proficient public speaking skills required to translate scientific concepts to a broad audience.
  • Experience with production OIT software is a plus (e.g., Unicorn, SCADA, Delta V, RS Batch, Pi Historian).
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
