About the position

The Marine Biologist position within the Department of Defense involves preparing and reviewing natural resource documents to ensure technical accuracy and compliance with environmental regulations. The role requires effective communication of environmental data to various stakeholders, including military and civilian communities, and involves leading complex projects related to environmental assessments and compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare or review Natural Resource documents ensuring technical accuracy and consistency.
  • Review Environmental Assessments (EA's) and Environmental Impact Statements (EIS's) for NEPA compliance.
  • Communicate environmental information and data on technical issues to military and civilian communities.
  • Prepare and conduct briefings for commands, elected officials, the public, and regulatory agencies.
  • Review schedules, cost estimates, and strategies developed by team members for accuracy.
  • Evaluate plans and actions for compliance with environmental laws and regulations.
  • Act as a project leader for execution of complex or controversial projects.

Requirements

  • Must possess a degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or a related discipline.
  • At least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.
  • Experience in writing or reviewing natural resources documents for technical accuracy.
  • Expertise in environmental regulations such as the Endangered Species Act and National Environmental Policy Act.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining project criteria, schedules, and budgets.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Marine Mammal Protection Act permit applications.
  • Knowledge of Essential Fish Habitat Assessments.
