About The Position

The Marine Captain for the R/V Western Flyer at the University of South Florida is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the research vessel, ensuring compliance with US Coast Guard regulations. This role involves overseeing the vessel's daily operations, crew management, and maintenance, while also providing leadership during educational and research marine expeditions. The Captain plays a crucial role in maintaining safety protocols and conducting training for crew and passengers, all while working in various weather conditions and potentially hazardous environments.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid USCG Master 1600 GRT Oceans license at the time of hire.
  • Minimum of five years combined experience as a US Coast Guard licensed Master 1600 GRT Oceans.
  • At least three years pilothouse experience operating a vessel in near coastal waters or oceans.
  • Unlimited Radar Observer endorsement and certifications for Standards for Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW-95).
  • First Aid and CPR certified, valid TWIC, valid driver's license, and valid US Passport.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced Captain experience (10+ years) supervising a large crew onboard.
  • Experience with ROV operations and Dynamic Positioning, including DPO qualification.
  • Multi-Hull or SWATH vessel experience.
  • Previous experience with deck winches and operation of oceanographic equipment.
  • Working knowledge of diving operations, marine rigging, and salvage operations.

Responsibilities

  • Function as the Captain of FIO's oceanographic research vessels, overseeing piloting, navigating, logistics, and operations.
  • Ensure the safe and efficient operation and navigation of the vessel in all weather conditions.
  • Supervise deck safety practices during all deck operations both in-port and at-sea.
  • Manage crew training and conduct regular/emergency drills, including man overboard and shipboard fire drills.
  • Oversee maintenance and operation of all ship systems, including plumbing, electrical, and navigation systems.
  • Conduct pre-cruise inspections to ensure vessel cleanliness and readiness for research missions.
  • Provide shipboard briefing and orientation for all scientific parties aboard the vessel.
  • Troubleshoot vessel or equipment failures to ensure completion of research missions.
  • Perform administrative duties, including documentation of vessel walkthroughs and employee relations concerns.
