About the position

The Marine Mechanic position with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) involves the maintenance and repair of diesel engines and marine equipment within the Ferry Division. The role requires performing a variety of tasks from general maintenance to complex repairs, under the guidance of a Marine Mechanic Supervisor. Responsibilities

• Repair and overhaul diesel engines, including disassembly, inspection, and re-assembly of various engine components.
• Repair and adjust reduction gears, clutches, and couplings.
• Replace propeller shafts and bearings, ensuring proper alignment with engines.
• Repair and overhaul fire pumps, bilge pumps, and hydraulic pumps.
• Utilize bench grinders, belt sanders, bandsaws, and pneumatic tools for maintenance tasks.
• Operate horizontal milling machines, lathes, radial arm drill presses, and hydraulic presses.
• Read and interpret blueprints for repair and maintenance tasks.
• Use common cutting tools and measuring instruments for precision work.
• Perform related duties as required.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Three years of progressive experience in the repair of diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, hydraulic, air, and electric systems.
• Knowledge of operating principles of diesel and gasoline engines, reduction gears, hydraulic systems, and control systems.
• Ability to diagnose and repair malfunctioning equipment.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in the ship repair or shipbuilding industry.
