About the position

The Marine Safety Specialist position is an entry-level role within the Marine Safety Management series, responsible for providing supplemental supervision to lifeguards and subordinate personnel at the beach, harbor, and ocean areas. This role involves performing ocean rescues, maintaining safety standards, and ensuring the protection of beach patrons. The specialist operates from an emergency rescue vehicle and is tasked with enforcing municipal ordinances, conducting community education on safety, and participating in emergency response operations.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise subordinate personnel and lifeguards at the beach, harbor, and ocean area.
  • Perform ocean rescues and inform patrons of hazardous conditions.
  • Conduct routine maintenance on lifeguard towers, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Maintain daily records of activities and complete reports.
  • Interact with the public, answer questions, and enforce municipal ordinances.
  • Operate specialized lifesaving equipment and perform first aid practices.
  • Assume control of rescue and aquatic emergencies until relieved by a supervisor.
  • Assist in briefing and training subordinate personnel.
  • Coordinate lifeguard work schedules and assist in staff selection.
  • Conduct community education on beach and ocean safety.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent certificate.
  • Minimum of three seasons as an Ocean Lifeguard I, II, III, or a combination thereof with the Huntington Beach Fire Department.
  • Valid California Class C driver license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification issued by the State of California or County EMS.
  • Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) Certification.
  • Valid CPR Certification.

Nice-to-haves

  • Supervisory experience is preferred.
