About the position

The Marine Technician position at the University of Washington involves supporting scientific and educational cruises aboard research vessels, primarily the R/V Thomas G. Thompson and R/V Rachel Carson, as well as the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy. The role requires extensive time spent at sea, performing technical and practical tasks related to ocean sciences, including data collection, equipment maintenance, and logistical support. The technician will work collaboratively with a diverse team to ensure successful scientific missions while upholding safety and inclusiveness on board.

Responsibilities

  • Support science aboard research vessels operated by the University of Washington, including R/V Thomas G. Thompson and R/V Rachel Carson.
  • Stand regular watches at sea, perform scientific data collection and archiving, and assist with deployment and recovery of scientific equipment.
  • Operate, monitor, and maintain shipboard scientific instruments and associated software, navigation, and communication systems.
  • Liaise with the Science Party to communicate pertinent information on science operations and advise on efficient data gathering methods.
  • Assist in maintaining compliance with safety procedures and proper storage of hazardous materials.
  • Provide weekly and final cruise summary reports detailing successes and deficiencies in meeting objectives.
  • Plan and implement instrumentation or computer upgrades, documenting procedures and configurations.
  • Manage shipboard computer systems and networks, ensuring optimal configuration for science missions.
  • Provide logistical support while on shore, including ordering and shipping equipment and providing technical support to shipboard personnel.
  • Participate in training opportunities and contribute ideas to improve efficiency and function of the Shipboard Science Support Group.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • 2 years of experience as a marine technician on vessels in the U.S. Academic Research Fleet, preferably on a global class vessel.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work under and meet short deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work safely and effectively at sea in adverse weather conditions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience operating and maintaining standard shipboard scientific instruments.
  • Network administration expertise and strong working knowledge of VLANs.
