The Hanover Insurance Group is seeking a Director of Underwriting to join our Inland Marine team in Itasca, IL. This full-time, exempt role is a hybrid opportunity that plays a crucial part in our Specialty division. The Director will manage all sales and underwriting functions within assigned territories, driving team performance in underwriting management and achieving new business targets. This position is responsible for ensuring the consistent use and optimization of best practices and tools within the team. The Director will manage, coach, and mentor underwriters in their agency relationships, resolve escalations, and enhance product knowledge across the team. Collaboration with Operations partners on underwriting technicians and assistants is essential, as is overseeing the renewal process guidelines and workflows to ensure efficient management of the renewal book. In this role, the Director will develop and implement strategies based on current trends and underwriting results, identifying enhanced sell and cross-sell opportunities to foster growth within other lines of business and customer segments. The Director will partner with leadership to help develop and drive the regional business strategy, overseeing the operational and technical work of the team while implementing best practices for claim handling. A key aspect of this role is creating a high-performance culture through effective communication, goal setting, and proactive management of team performance. The Director will also be responsible for recruiting and retaining top talent, maintaining an active talent pipeline, and managing the underwriting teams to achieve business objectives. The Director will need to apply sound underwriting principles to decipher complex accounts, evaluate training needs, and conduct training sessions as necessary. Portfolio and sales management will also be a focus, as the Director assists in developing strategic financial plans and drives profit improvement processes while balancing retention. Keeping current on state and territory issues, regulations, and trends is vital to ensure the team achieves profit goals and utilizes available tools and resources effectively.
