About the position

Alphanumeric is seeking a Market Research Analyst - Lead to join our team in Lake Mary, FL. This position is pivotal in supporting our environmental-friendly energy initiatives focused on sustainability. The successful candidate will proactively analyze data and present insights that are crucial for improving business outcomes and supporting growth strategy initiatives. This role requires a deep understanding of complex markets and the regulations governing them, particularly in competitive power markets, vertically integrated regulated markets, and generation technologies. The ideal candidate will have a broad background that enables them to conduct market trend research while also grasping the techno-commercial aspects of our products, including emerging technologies in the power markets. In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining up-to-date information and research on power and energy markets, including generation technologies, customer need assessments, new or changing environmental regulations, and advancements in competitors' technology and business strategies. You will lead modeling projects from start to finish, applying data mining capabilities to aggregate, validate, and disseminate actionable insights around power and energy markets, target customers, and competitive strategies. Managing multiple projects with overlapping timelines while ensuring high quality and consistency is essential. Your responsibilities will also include performing research and synthesizing data related to plant retirements, new entrants, transmission status, demand, and fuel price expectations. You will support market strategic initiatives by developing short-term and long-term fundamental viewpoints, resource expansion, and resource cost trends. Analyzing differing customer needs driven by market conditions and evaluating areas of opportunity for sales and services will be key components of your role. You will also develop the ability to analyze market price impacts due to potential market changes, such as renewable penetration levels and market rule changes. Regular reporting on evolving market trends, energy market dynamics, and customer use cases will aid leadership decisions and assist with the strategic allocation of resources. You will collaborate with commercial leads to identify target markets and prepare recommendations around key markets, working closely with front-line sales/origination teams to understand customer needs and develop suitable transactions or product structures. Additionally, you will support product line management by providing research and analysis to help identify opportunities for product improvement and development. Your role will also involve working with commercial and marketing communication teams to assist in the development and preparation of marketing materials, as well as maintaining various economic models for strategic planning and external publications.

Responsibilities

  • Lead modeling projects end to end and apply data mining capabilities to aggregate, validate and disseminate actionable insights around power & energy markets, target customers and competitive strategies.
  • Manage multiple projects with overlapping timelines while ensuring excellent quality, consistency, and client support.
  • Perform research and synthesize data through development of datasets and presentations related to plant retirements and new entrants, transmission status, demand and fuel price expectations.
  • Support market strategic initiatives in the development of short-term and long-term fundamental points of view, resource expansion and resource cost trends.
  • Research market trends, competitive intelligence and prepare presentations to support management approval of proposed growth plans.
  • Analyze differing customer needs driven by market conditions and evaluate areas of opportunity for sales and services.
  • Develop ability to analyze market price impacts due to potential market changes to renewable penetration levels, transmission infrastructure, supply/demand balance, and market rule changes.
  • Research and analyze evolving market trends, energy market dynamics, customer use cases and present it through regular reports to aid leadership decisions and assist with the strategic allocation of resources.
  • Assist commercial leads in the identification of target markets; prepare recommendations around key markets.
  • Support Product Line Management and provide research/analysis and feedback to help identify opportunities for product improvement and development.
  • Work with commercial and marketing communication teams to assist in the development and preparation of marketing materials.
  • Develop and maintain various economic models including life cycle cost models, dispatch models, and discounted cash flow models for strategic planning purposes, internal studies, and external publications.
  • Perform other job-related duties and work on special projects as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree (B.S/B.A.) in Engineering, Business, Finance, or Economics; MBA/MS preferred.
  • At least 5-7 years of related experience and/or training, with experience beyond 5 years highly desired for the Manager position.
  • Strong analytical background in the power-utilities/energy industry.
  • Ability to work independently and motivated to take on new meaningful tasks even if not directed to do so.
  • Strong Excel and PowerPoint skills; experience with Tableau highly desirable.
  • Ability to translate data/research/analysis into actionable insights that are understood by a non-technical audience.
  • Self-motivated with strong attention to detail; ability to multi-task.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with optimization tools including commercial programs such as MATLAB, GE-MAPS, PROMOD, PLEXOS, AURORA or similar.
  • Experience in a consulting or professional environment supporting clients is a plus.
  • Working understanding of energy market dynamics, and a passion for learning.
  • Experience with power financial modeling and analysis a plus.
  • Experience in statistical analysis programs (e.g., Stata and R), Tableau, SQL, and financial databases (e.g., Bloomberg and S&P Capital IQ), with a desire to expand those capabilities.
