About the position

The Marketing and Communications Coordinator plays a vital role within the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Stony Brook University. This position is responsible for supporting all aspects of marketing and communications efforts aimed at enhancing the visibility of the College and promoting its educational and research objectives to diverse audiences. Reporting directly to the Strategic Communications Manager, the coordinator will engage in various tasks including content creation, website maintenance, event promotion, and strategic planning. The role requires a creative self-starter with excellent communication skills, capable of working independently while also collaborating effectively with a team. The incumbent will be expected to manage sensitive communications with discretion and maintain a high level of professionalism in all interactions. In terms of content creation, the coordinator will research and write materials that support the College's marketing and communications initiatives. This includes developing content for websites, newsletters, social media, and video assets. The coordinator will also be responsible for maintaining the College's websites, ensuring they are up-to-date and visually appealing. Attendance at events is required to capture stories and create promotional content, while also managing a content calendar for various platforms. The coordinator will assist in implementing marketing strategies that align with the goals of the College and the University, including outreach programs. This involves liaising with various departments and managing communications requests. Additionally, the coordinator will oversee student interns, providing guidance and managing their tasks. This full-time position is classified as FLSA Non-Exempt, making it eligible for overtime pay, and it offers a competitive salary range.

Responsibilities

  • Research and write content to support communications and marketing efforts for Stony Brook University and the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
  • Maintain college websites for CEAS and assist other departments with their sites, including searching for relevant graphics and designing pages.
  • Attend events as CEAS Communication representative to cover stories, take photos, and create video content.
  • Promote College of Engineering and Applied Sciences' events and develop a content calendar for use across multiple platforms.
  • Assist the Strategic Communications Manager in implementing marketing/communications strategies and writing marketing plans for departments and programs.
  • Liaise with CEAS departments and appropriate University offices, managing the Dean's office communications inbox and writing general correspondence.
  • Oversee student communication interns, assigning tasks and managing deadlines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher).
  • Two (2) years of full-time professional experience in journalism, communications, marketing, or public relations (student experience may be considered).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Creative self-starter who is highly organized and can work independently.
  • Experience working with a high degree of professionalism and good judgment.
  • Experience maintaining confidential information and handling sensitive communication with discretion.
  • Motivated, self-starter with high energy and passion for the mission of the College.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, English, or a related field.
  • Additional years (3+) of full-time professional experience in communications, marketing, or public relations.
  • Experience in creating and managing content for media relations, websites, and social media.
  • Ability to modify content for varied media and target audiences.
  • Experience with effective graphic design and branding principles.
  • Experience using Adobe Cloud (InDesign).
  • Photography/video experience and web administration experience using Omni CMS.
  • Experience with magazine and newsletter publications and email marketing tools such as Mailchimp.

Benefits

  • $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
  • Full-time appointment with eligibility for overtime provisions of the FLSA.
