About the position

The Marketing and Communications Director at Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City will play a pivotal role in shaping the organization's voice, presence, and reputation within the community. This position is responsible for leading the communications strategy and executing various fundraising campaigns, as well as managing marketing efforts for the organization's five ReStore locations. The director will oversee owned and earned channels, including public relations, social media, the website, advertising, and email communications. In this role, the director will develop and manage Habitat KC's communication strategy, ensuring that all creative development aligns with the organization's strategic priorities. Collaboration with internal leadership is essential to craft engaging internal communications that educate staff on various initiatives. The director will also identify and develop compelling stories and content that reflect the organization's messaging and image. Working closely with the Vice President of Development, the director will produce plans to achieve annual fundraising goals, which includes creating, project managing, and executing fundraising campaigns. The position requires managing all external-facing communications to ensure brand requirements are met and key messages are clear. The director will also develop strategies for print and digital communication, oversee marketing campaigns, and manage direct reports while maintaining consistent communication regarding their goals and career development. Additionally, the director will supervise the implementation of social media strategies across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, ensuring appropriate communication and marketing strategies for Habitat KC events. The role also involves managing external vendors, including contract development and relationship management with printers, mail houses, web designers, video production, and graphic designers. In terms of media relations, the director will create media advisories, press releases, and opinion pieces while building and maintaining relationships with press and media contacts. The position also includes leveraging thought leadership opportunities to position Habitat KC as an expert in affordable housing. The director will collaborate with the Vice President of Development to develop strategies and produce content for promoting the organization's fundraising initiatives, including campaigns for Women Build, Pride Build, and Veterans Build.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage Habitat KC's communication strategy including creative development.
  • Collaborate with internal leadership to craft internal communications that engage and educate staff on initiatives.
  • Identify and develop compelling stories and content that reflect the organization's strategic priorities, messaging, and image.
  • Work closely with Vice President of Development to produce plans that ensure annual fundraising goals are achieved.
  • Create, project manage and execute fundraising campaigns.
  • Manage all external-facing communication, ensuring brand requirements are met and key messages are clear.
  • Develop strategy and oversee production and publishing of print and digital communication and campaigns.
  • Develop and coordinate in-house and paid marketing, including advertising campaigns, website, and social media, blogs, search engine optimization, etc.
  • Manage direct reports and maintain consistent communication regarding goals and career development.
  • Maintain and use Habitat KC website and social media channels to develop and reinforce the organization's mission and vision and engage with consumers.
  • Supervise direct report to implement social media strategies: Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn.
  • Ensure appropriate communication and marketing strategies for Habitat KC events and manage all online components.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 4-6 years of marketing and communication experience, preferably in an agency or with a nonprofit.
  • Superior oral and written communication skills.
  • Creative and analytical, using data to inform all decisions.
  • Experience managing marketing operations and processes.
  • Experience with people management and development expertise.
  • Self-motivated team player, with strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to shifting priorities.
  • Strong project management skills and able to manage multiple strands of work towards an overall objective.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office and design software to assist with marketing creation.
