The essential duties of the Marketing and Communications Specialist include serving as a communications generalist, assisting with social media content and website updates, writing stories for the college magazine, responding to media requests, and maximizing the public relations value of activities involving STCL Houston personnel. The specialist will also coordinate advertising efforts, handle daily writing tasks, manage basic video editing and design projects, and cover events to capture stories and photos for quick turnaround usage. Additionally, the role involves creating PowerPoint presentations, updating MarCom information on the intranet and website, and generating reports that demonstrate results in media relations and social media efforts. The specialist must utilize brand standards in all daily work and collaborate closely with project leaders within the Marketing and Communications team.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a high-energy communications generalist handling writing, social media, photography, and basic videography.
  • Assist with social media content and website updates in coordination with the Marketing/Digital leader.
  • Write stories for InRe magazine and help the PR/Comms leader with production management.
  • Respond to media requests, write and distribute press releases, and pitch stories.
  • Maximize PR value of activities involving STCL Houston personnel.
  • Send emergency closures and late starts to local media.
  • Coordinate with the Marketing/Digital leader to schedule, place, and track advertising.
  • Handle daily deadline-driven writing including news, features, releases, social media, and web content.
  • Manage basic video editing and design primarily for social media using tools like Canva.
  • Coordinate project elements on selected publications/events with MarCom colleagues.
  • Cover events to capture stories and photos for quick turnaround usage.
  • Create PowerPoint presentations in coordination with the AVP for events like Town Halls.
  • Update MarCom information on the intranet and website.
  • Run and create reports demonstrating results in media relations and social media; coordinate MarCom dashboard report with AVP.
  • Utilize brand standards in daily work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, English, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in marketing and communications.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, especially Word and PowerPoint; Excel is helpful.
  • Experience with social media management, email marketing, and web content management (WordPress).
  • Basic videography and photography editing skills.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite is a plus.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to conduct effective information-gathering interviews and meetings.
  • Critical thinking skills and sound decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to prioritize work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
