About the position

The Marketing and Communications Specialist at Arizona State University (ASU) is a dynamic role focused on creating compelling content that engages students, institutional stakeholders, and external audiences. This position is specifically tailored for the Hispanic Research Center (HRC) within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, emphasizing the importance of effective communication strategies that resonate with Latino/a/x communities. The specialist will work collaboratively with HRC staff to identify, research, write, curate, and edit content across various communication platforms, ensuring that all messaging aligns with the center's mission and branding standards. In this role, the Communications Specialist will be responsible for planning and developing high-quality communications that cater to diverse audiences, including faculty, staff, students, donors, and the general public. The position requires a blend of creativity and analytical skills, as the specialist will need to research and gather information through interviews and web research, producing engaging stories that connect with the community. The specialist will also manage social media channels, creating optimized content to drive interaction and engagement, while also evaluating content performance and recommending strategies for improvement. The ideal candidate will possess strong writing skills, an understanding of journalistic style, and the ability to generate innovative storytelling methods across various media formats, including print, video, and audio. Additionally, the specialist will oversee the department's website, ensuring it aligns with HRC's goals and ASU's branding standards. This position is not grant-funded and offers a salary range of $55,000 to $60,000 per year, depending on experience.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop, and write creative communications for the Hispanic Research Center using various digital and print mediums.
  • Research and collect information through interviews and web research to create compelling content.
  • Collaborate with staff and stakeholders to identify opportunities for on-brand creative work and long-form stories.
  • Organize material and produce news and feature stories with a focus on journalistic style.
  • Edit and proofread materials for accuracy, style, consistency, and readability, recommending changes as necessary.
  • Generate innovative storytelling methods across print, video, audio, and graphics.
  • Manage social media pages and produce optimized content to drive engagement.
  • Evaluate content performance and recommend optimization strategies.
  • Work closely with marketing and communications representatives across ASU to source content.
  • Manage the department website to ensure alignment with HRC mission and ASU branding standards.
  • Oversee student workers contributing to social media and marketing communications.
  • Utilize Salesforce Marketing Cloud for segmented email communications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communications, Marketing, Education, or a related field.
  • Three years of related work experience in developing comprehensive and creative communication, or seven years of related work experience.
  • Experience in higher education, creative services, or agency setting is preferred.
  • Knowledge of AP style, media relations, content development, and editing.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to use creative and critical thinking skills, with attention to detail.
  • Experience in social media content creation and administration.
  • Project management experience, managing multiple projects simultaneously.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Knowledge of web content best practices.
  • Experience with mass email communication tools like Salesforce Marketing Cloud.
  • Knowledge of photography and video production.
  • Experience in developing strategic communications for a multi-channel environment.
