About the position

The Marketing and Communications Specialist position at the University of Michigan is a pivotal role within the Departments of Germanic Languages and Literatures (GLL) and Slavic Languages and Literatures (SLL). This position is designed for a strategic partner who will develop and implement both digital and print marketing strategies tailored to the unique needs of each department. The successful candidate will be responsible for applying these strategies across various platforms, ensuring that the departments effectively communicate their missions and engage with students, faculty, and the broader community. In this role, you will plan and support a dynamic calendar of events that align with the departments' objectives. Effective communication and collaboration with departmental stakeholders are essential for success. The position is hybrid, requiring 3-4 days of in-person work and 1-2 days of remote work, with flexibility in scheduling to accommodate events, which may necessitate being present five days a week during peak times in the academic year. Some evening and weekend work may also be required. Your responsibilities will include developing and implementing marketing and communication strategies in collaboration with faculty and staff, curating a robust social media presence, managing content for digital signage, generating newsletters, and evaluating marketing strategies to enhance engagement. Additionally, you will design promotional materials and coordinate a variety of departmental events, ensuring that all marketing projects and events stay within budget and align with the departments' missions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement marketing and communication strategies in collaboration with faculty and staff.
  • Curate and maintain a robust social media presence aimed at engaging students, faculty, and the broader community.
  • Manage and create content for digital signage.
  • Generate departmental newsletters using Mailchimp.
  • Evaluate marketing and social media strategies; prepare and present regular reports to departmental leadership and make recommendations for changes to increase engagement and results.
  • Collaborate with the College of LSA's central marketing team.
  • Design and create original flyers, posters, digital signage, bi-annual newsletters, event programs, itineraries, and other required event materials in partnership and consultation with stakeholders.
  • Design social media graphics/campaigns.
  • Provide comprehensive event coordination and organization for a broad range of departmental events.
  • Develop, monitor, and ensure budgets for marketing projects and events are within established parameters.
  • Develop relationships with faculty, staff, and graduate students to understand the climate and mission of the units and effectively develop marketing strategies.
  • Communicate effectively and efficiently with departmental stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, graphic design, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least three years of professional experience related to this position's outlined responsibilities.
  • Creative and innovative graphic design experience, especially for social media and other digital platforms, with expert-level skills in the Adobe Creative Suite of software.
  • A demonstrated commitment to the values of diversity, equity, access, and inclusion (DEI) within professional settings with the ability to integrate these values into a marketing strategy.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills with proven editorial skills and experience enhancing content quality to meet unit goals.

  • Self-starter who is able to work independently and with limited direction.
