About the position

The Marketing and Sales Director (MSD) at the University of Pittsburgh Press is responsible for overseeing the marketing department and coordinating the publication process. This role involves managing the marketing budget, product pricing, and promotional planning to enhance book sales in both local and global markets. The MSD serves as a liaison with external vendors and ensures compliance with relevant laws and regulations. The position requires a strong passion for books and a deep understanding of the publishing industry, particularly in trade and academic sales.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the Marketing department of the University of Pittsburgh Press.
  • Plan, direct, and coordinate the publication process.
  • Oversee the marketing budget and product pricing.
  • Manage bibliographic database and sales representatives.
  • Conduct review media outreach and manage the Edelweiss database.
  • Develop and implement sales and promotional planning functions for the Press' booklist.
  • Investigate new sales outlets while increasing sales through existing channels.
  • Provide feedback on potential book acquisitions and book descriptive copy.
  • Set publication dates and ensure accuracy of information regarding laws and regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the book publishing industry preferred.
  • Familiarity with book industry trends and both trade and academic sales.

  • Experience with marketing in academic publishing.
  • Knowledge of digital marketing strategies.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
