About the position

The Content Writer for Purdue University's Marketing and Communications team plays a crucial role in enhancing the university's visibility and reputation through compelling storytelling and creative content production. This position is designed for a versatile individual who can conceptualize and produce engaging narratives that align with Purdue University's brand and strategic objectives across various media channels. The role is hybrid, requiring 25% on-campus presence while allowing for 75% remote work, making it essential for candidates to reside within driving distance of the West Lafayette campus. In this position, the Content Writer will be responsible for crafting emotive and creative content that adheres to strategic briefs and aligns with Purdue's master brand platform and guidelines. The writer will execute writing requests with precision and timeliness, embracing the iterative nature of creative work. Outputs may include brand creative, feature stories, social media content, promotional materials, and campaign creative. Collaboration is key, as the writer will attend virtual planning sessions, project launch meetings, and monthly in-person staff meetings to brainstorm ideas and concepts with the creative team. Additionally, the Content Writer will conduct research on peer institutions, campus partners, competitors, and target audiences to inform creative strategies and identify content opportunities. Editing and proofreading will also be part of the responsibilities, ensuring that all materials meet the highest standards of quality and accuracy.

Responsibilities

  • Write creative, emotive content and feature stories according to strategic brief and aligned with Purdue University's master brand platform and brand guidelines.
  • Execute writing requests with accuracy and timeliness and embrace creative iteration.
  • Produce outputs including brand creative, stories, social media content, promotional materials, and campaign creative.
  • Attend virtual planning sessions, project launch meetings, and other collaborative team functions, plus monthly in-person Marketing and Communications all-staff meetings.
  • Brainstorm ideas and concepts with other members of the creative team.
  • Research peer institutions and campus partners, their competitors, and target audiences to support creative strategy, identify content opportunities, and inform execution.
  • Edit and proofread material as demand and scheduling requires.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, English, advertising, journalism, public relations, or related field.
  • Two (2) years of professional writing experience.
  • In lieu of degree, consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required work experience; Associate's + 4 years' experience or HS/GED + 6 years of experience.
  • Experience writing across digital mediums.
  • Proficient expertise in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and willingness to become proficient in other software.
  • Proficient in AP Style.
  • Understanding of writing applications in traditional and emerging channels.
  • Ability to streamline verbose content to focus on the main message in a concise, effective manner.
  • Consistent quality control in work.
  • Understanding of specific channels or vertical markets as required by job function.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt style of copy to various audiences, purposes, or media.
  • Competency in concepting and presenting creative work.
  • Strong organizational abilities, including time and resource management.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with external and internal constituents.
