About the position

The City of Hampton, VA is seeking a dedicated and innovative Marketing & Outreach Coordinator to join our team. This role is pivotal in developing and implementing marketing strategies that engage the community and promote a diverse range of recreational programs and events offered by the Parks, Recreation & Leisure Services (PRLS) department. The Marketing & Outreach Coordinator will be responsible for creating a comprehensive marketing strategy that effectively advertises activities and initiatives within the department. In this position, the coordinator will support the daily operations of the Marketing & Outreach unit, which includes researching current marketing trends, preparing surveys, studies, and reports, and coordinating the design and production of various marketing materials such as flyers, posters, newsletters, program guides, and brochures. The role also involves managing social media marketing efforts and performing special project assignments as needed. The Marketing & Outreach Coordinator will work under the general supervision of the Business Services Administrator and collaborate closely with the PRLS Leadership Team to ensure that all marketing efforts align with the department's goals and objectives. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in marketing, public relations, or media relations, with a proven track record of developing successful marketing campaigns. This position requires effective communication skills, both oral and written, to engage with internal and external customers and to create compelling content across various marketing mediums, adhering to AP style guidelines. Additionally, the coordinator must have a keen eye for detail and be willing to attend evening and weekend meetings and events as necessary. Some local travel may also be required, and the incumbent may be designated as essential personnel during city emergencies, which could involve long hours and unusual schedules.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement innovative marketing strategies to promote recreational programs and events.
  • Research marketing trends and prepare surveys, studies, and reports.
  • Coordinate the design and production of marketing materials such as flyers, posters, newsletters, program guides, and brochures.
  • Manage social media marketing efforts to engage the community.
  • Perform special project assignments as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external customers, writing and editing content for various marketing mediums.
  • Attend evening and weekend meetings and events as required.
  • Conduct some local travel for marketing purposes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of full-time equivalent experience in Marketing, Public Relations, or Media Relations.
  • Knowledge and experience with software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, QuarkXPress, InDesign, Flash, and HTML.
  • Experience in print and web design, typography, video storyboarding, shooting, and editing.
  • Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) certification preferred.
  • Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton's criteria.
  • Ability to write and edit content for a variety of marketing mediums, following AP style.
