About the position

The Mass Spec Application Developer I position at ARUP Laboratories is a mid-level staff research role focused on the design, development, optimization, and delivery of mass spectrometry-based high-throughput clinical testing solutions. The role involves conducting research, implementing new assays, and presenting findings at various professional forums. The position requires a balance of autonomy and collaboration, contributing to the advancement of laboratory services in a clinical setting.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, optimization, and delivery of mass spectrometry-based high throughput clinical testing solutions.
  • Assess and evaluate the design and performance characteristics of new mass spectrometry instrumentation and equipment.
  • Design and perform scientifically sound experiments to solve technical and scientific problems for the Mass Spec DevOps team.
  • Proactively evaluate new technologies and implement new methods within the mass spectrometry assay and analytical pipeline.
  • Contribute scientific and technical expertise in developing and improving quality control systems for mass spectrometry testing.
  • Evaluate and implement new data processing solutions for mass spectrometry testing.
  • Design, plan, and implement method development strategies and validations for the production clinical lab.
  • Mentor and train Mass Spec Application Engineers and Specialists as necessary.
  • Lead the development of protocols for improvement and evaluation of mass spectrometry tests.
  • Communicate project progression and hurdles with team members and stakeholders.
  • Develop new procedures to improve quality, cost, and labor efficiency.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical field and ten years of directly related work experience, or a Master's degree with six years of experience, or a Ph.D. with four years of experience.
  • Experience in quality control and mass spectrometry instrumentation.
  • Strong communication skills for presenting findings and collaborating with teams.

Nice-to-haves

  • Categorical ASCP certification in the applicable discipline (C(ASCP), MLS(ASCP), MT(ASCP)).
  • Prior experience as a Field Service Engineer, Application Engineer, or Development Scientist in mass spectroscopy.
