About the position

The M&P Engineer position at Blue Origin is focused on supporting the Lunar Transportation team by applying technical expertise in materials and processes to ensure safe and successful human spaceflight. This role involves collaboration with cross-functional teams to develop and qualify materials and processes for space vehicles, contributing to the company's mission of enabling millions of people to live and work in space.

Responsibilities

  • Provide broad materials & processes support for metallic and/or composite materials including forging, casting, forming, extrusion, plating, coating, friction welding, brazing, anodization, and passivation.
  • Support design, analysis, materials selection, process development, and M&P qualification for space vehicles.
  • Review production drawings for large complex assemblies systematically, documenting the review to the established requirements.
  • Responsible for M&P signatory release of engineering drawings for parts and assemblies.
  • Lead and coordinate internal and external M&P efforts, including development of specifications, supplier qualification, First Article Inspection, mechanical testing, and customer-facing updates.
  • Contribute to the development of internal engineering and quality processes to standardize and accelerate material evaluation, implementation, and qualification.
  • Work with cross-functional teams within the Lunar organization and other business units.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in Aerospace, Material Science, Mechanical, Manufacturing or Chemical Engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years of demonstrated M&P Engineering experience on a production flight program.
  • Experience in materials and manufacturing process review and selection, development, and qualification for aerospace applications.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing test plans for analysis and qualification of components, materials, and processes.
  • Familiarity with standard methods for testing mechanical properties of aerospace grade materials (either metallic or composite).
  • Experience organizing and managing materials and process-related data in a company accessible database.
  • Experience with design and qualification for at least one of the following areas: welding qualification, metallic inserts, fasteners, EMI & EMC, corrosion, flammability and FST, solid or sandwich laminate composite structures.
  • Ability to travel to support development and testing opportunities at other Blue Origin and vendor sites.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice-to-haves

  • M.S. degree in Aerospace, Material Science, Mechanical, Manufacturing or Chemical Engineering or related field.
  • In-depth knowledge of metallic materials characterization techniques (e.g. SEM, EDS, metallography, and mechanical testing).
  • In-depth knowledge of composite materials characterization techniques (e.g. ultrasound, microscopy).
