About the position

The Materials Characterization Engineer at BWX Technologies will play a crucial role in supporting multiple nuclear development projects within the Advanced Technologies group. This position involves developing new material characterization methodologies, performing materials testing, and mentoring peers, all while contributing to innovative nuclear solutions for various sectors including space, defense, and commercial applications.

Responsibilities

  • Develop new material characterization methodologies to support material development programs.
  • Perform characterization on samples submitted from various research and development or prototype production programs.
  • Interface with materials and chemical engineers to identify techniques that provide critical objective criteria for R&D activities.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in a technical field of study (e.g., Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, etc.) is required.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience is required. Advanced degrees may substitute for some years of experience.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to multi-task are required.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen with no dual citizenship.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience or foundational understanding of analytical characterization techniques such as ICP-MS, TGA, FTIR, LECO-OCNHS, SEM, XRD, CT, BET SA, EDS, EBSD, PSA.
  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in material science or chemistry (or related fields).
  • Strong understanding in the characterization of inorganic materials (metals, ceramics, composites, etc.).
  • Strong expertise in chemical analysis including combustion analysis, isotopic analysis, and cationic analysis methods.
