About the position

CenterPoint Energy is seeking a Materials Manager for its Southern Gas Operations and Minnesota Utilities. This role is pivotal in overseeing the procurement, data governance, and distribution of materials and equipment necessary for the operation of the gas distribution network. The Materials Manager will ensure that materials are available for construction and maintenance while optimizing costs and adhering to regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the implementation of an enterprise-wide Master Data Governance strategy for materials management.
  • Develop and manage procurement strategies to ensure timely availability of materials and equipment.
  • Collaborate with Procurement to negotiate contracts with suppliers for cost-effective materials.
  • Work with demand planning, engineering, operations, and project management teams to forecast material needs.
  • Maintain relationships with key suppliers and evaluate their performance based on quality, cost, and delivery metrics.
  • Coordinate the transportation of materials to various work sites for timely delivery.
  • Oversee inventory levels to avoid shortages or excess stock.
  • Implement inventory control systems for accurate tracking and distribution of materials.
  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations and safety standards in material handling.
  • Prepare and submit reports on material costs, usage, and inventory levels to senior management.
  • Supervise and mentor materials staff across multiple sites, fostering a culture of safety and teamwork.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in supply chain management, Logistics, Business Administration, Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in materials management, preferably in the natural gas, utility or energy sector.
  • Experience in procurement, inventory management, master data governance, and supplier negotiation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree is preferred.
  • Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM).
  • Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP).
  • Lean Six Sigma certification.
