About the position

The Materials Process Engineer Level 4 at Northrop Grumman will provide materials engineering support to design engineering and production activities within the Marine Systems sector. This role involves analyzing, researching, designing, and developing materials and their fabrication processes to optimize their use in engineering designs and applications. The engineer will work in a fast-paced environment, supporting various programs including missile launch systems and propulsion and power generation across multiple platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze, research, design, and develop materials and their related fabrication and application processes.
  • Provide materials engineering support to design engineering and on-site production activities.
  • Develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of structures, systems, and subsystems.
  • Apply principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop material specifications and processing methods.
  • Conduct failure analysis of components, systems, and subsystems, including life predictions and requirement specifications.
  • Review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in STEM discipline with 8 years relevant work experience; or Master's Degree with 6 years; or Ph.D. with 3 years of relevant work experience.
  • Laboratory environment experience required.
  • Subject matter expertise with metallographic inspection and analysis of ferrous materials.
  • Knowledge of common commercial testing standards, material specs, and NavSea weld codes.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds.
  • US Citizenship required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Secret Security Clearance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Skills with non-metallics laboratory processes such as FTIR, thermal analysis, rheology, KF titration, and paints and coatings tests.
  • Experience with DoD processes and lifecycle management processes.
