About the position

The Materials Test Engineer will serve as a technical specialist in materials diagnostics and metallographic analysis within the Materials Science and Metallurgy Branch at Marshall Space Flight Center. This role involves collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team to support projects aimed at advancing space exploration, including returning humans to the Moon. The engineer will be responsible for developing testing reports, managing sample databases, and performing general engineering tasks in a lab environment.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical specialist in materials diagnostics and metallographic analysis.
  • Work according to standard operating and safety procedures and develop them.
  • Collaborate on a multi-disciplinary team to achieve project success and delivery in a specified timescale.
  • Develop cut plans and materials diagnostics testing reports.
  • Contribute to sample databases and perform general engineering tasks in metallography and materials diagnostics labs.
  • Use computers and software daily to generate reports, gather data, and communicate test results.
  • Interface with Engineering and Science Services Capabilities Augmentation (ESSCA) engineers, technicians, and NASA customers.

Requirements

  • Degree in mechanical engineering, materials engineering, or related field from an ABET-accredited university.
  • At least 5 years' experience with a BS, 3 years with a Master's, or a Ph.D. with relevant experience.
  • Technical experience or qualifications in Materials Science and Engineering.
  • Experience in a lab environment and general lab safety.
  • Highly organized with skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to adapt to changing technology development environments.
  • Experience working in a team environment with technicians and engineers.
  • Proficiency in using computers and applicable software for data management and communication.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Background in materials science, metallography, and materials diagnostics.
  • Experience handling hazardous chemicals in chemical etching.
  • Proficiency in data capture in a lab environment.
  • Experience troubleshooting laboratory problems and implementing corrective actions.
  • Experience in production and testing of aerospace hardware.
  • Familiarity with ASTM test methods concerning materials compatibility and analysis.
  • Experience in metallographic sample preparation and using materials diagnostics tools.
