About the position

The San Mateo County Community College District is seeking two full-time, tenure-track Mathematics Instructors to join the College of San Mateo. The ideal candidates will be committed to educational equity and will teach a range of mathematics courses from arithmetic to differential equations. This position emphasizes collaboration with faculty and staff to enhance student success and promote an inclusive learning environment.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses from arithmetic through differential equations
  • Assist in curriculum assessment and revisions and new course development
  • Participate in the development and/or selection of course materials, equipment, and technology that will enhance the math offerings of the department
  • Consult with students during regularly scheduled office and lab hours
  • Maintain expertise in current teaching methodologies and curricula
  • Participate as a member of department, division, and college committees
  • Perform other professional duties as required by contract and general institutional needs

Requirements

  • Masters degree or above in mathematics or applied mathematics OR Bachelors in either of the above AND Masters or above in statistics, physics, or mathematics education OR the equivalent
  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff

Nice-to-haves

  • Recent successful experience in teaching mathematics
  • Professional level of mathematical competence and the ability to teach the full range of community college courses in mathematics
  • Experience and skill in facilitating active learning, discussion, and peer-instruction within mathematics lecture courses
  • Recent experience working with racially minoritized and other disproportionately-impacted students in the classroom
  • Demonstrated ability to critically examine and remediate instructional practices to engage and support racially minoritized, LGBTQIA+, and other disproportionately impacted students
