About the position

The Associate School Athletic Director at Maui High School plays a crucial role in supporting the School Athletic Director in managing the school's athletic programs. This position is a full-time, 12-month limited term temporary appointment, which means that while it offers valuable experience, it does not grant probationary service credit or tenure. The Associate Athletic Director will be responsible for a variety of tasks that ensure the smooth operation of the athletic department, including budget development, compliance with regulations, and promoting high standards of conduct among student-athletes. The Associate Athletic Director will assist in developing the school athletic budget, generating expenditure plans, and maintaining accurate financial records. They will also be involved in inventory management, ensuring that supplies and equipment are adequately stocked and recommending purchases as necessary. Compliance with Title IX and other relevant laws is a critical aspect of this role, as is the promotion of sportsmanship and academic achievement among student-athletes. In addition to administrative duties, the Associate Athletic Director will help organize athletic awards programs, assist in staff onboarding, and coordinate training workshops for coaches. They will also be responsible for planning and supervising athletic trips, maintaining documentation related to the athletic program, and ensuring that all athletes meet eligibility requirements. The role requires a strong commitment to fostering good school-community relations and supporting the overall mission of the school through its athletic programs.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in developing the school athletic budget and generating expenditure plans.
  • Supports the School Athletic Director in maintaining accurate financial records.
  • Assists with inventory of supplies and equipment, identifying items for replacement or purchase.
  • Provides recommendations for developing rules and regulations for the athletic program.
  • Ensures compliance with Title IX and other applicable laws and regulations.
  • Promotes high standards of conduct and sportsmanship among student-athletes.
  • Assists in implementing policies to curb student violence and vandalism.
  • Prepares student eligibility and participation lists for all sports.
  • Organizes athletic awards programs.
  • Assists in staff onboarding and orientation for athletic staff.
  • Coordinates training workshops for coaches.
  • Plans and coordinates interscholastic and intramural games and matches.
  • Develops and administers the intramural program.
  • Assists in seeking athletic scholarships for student-athletes.
  • Supervises trips for athletic teams and may accompany teams on trips.
  • Maintains a report-filing system on athletic department matters.
  • Supervises the re-entry of injured athletes with medical clearance.
  • Distributes current athletic policy handbooks to coaches.
  • Arranges transportation for athletic teams and ensures certified drivers are used.
  • Ensures athletes have parental consent and insurance coverage before participation.
  • Fosters a program to support athletic teams and school spirit.
  • Supervises athletic ticket sales and fundraising events.
  • Assists in selecting and assigning athletic coaches and staff members.
  • Promotes good school-community relations regarding the athletic program.
  • Coordinates game support services and supervises home games in the absence of the Athletic Director.
  • Coordinates requests for pre- or post-game meals with the School Food Services Manager.
  • Coordinates support services for visiting teams.
  • Coordinates decisions concerning booster groups and community volunteers.
  • Supervises the use of facilities for athletic and instructional purposes.
  • Schedules and directs the use of athletic facilities, fields, and equipment.
  • Serves as Acting School Athletic Director in the absence of the Athletic Director.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree, preferably in education with coursework in physical education or sports/athletic administration.
  • Thirty-six (36) months of successful work experience as an assistant athletic director, high school head coach, sports management specialist, or in a related field.
  • Possession of certification from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) is preferred.
  • Knowledge of athletic administration philosophy, ethics, budgeting, crowd management, fundraising, health and safety, sports medicine, record keeping, and public relations.
  • Ability to plan, organize, direct, and coordinate school athletic activities; budget and prepare expenditure plans; communicate effectively; and operate computers and business machines.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) is preferred.
