About the position

The Access and User Services Specialist (Limited Term) at Swarthmore College's McCabe Library is responsible for ensuring patron access to library collections, services, and facilities. This role involves providing excellent customer service, supervising student workers, and assisting in the day-to-day operations of the library. The position is temporary, requiring 35 hours of work per week during the Spring 2025 semester, with specific responsibilities including student supervision, patron services, stacks maintenance, and facility management.

Responsibilities

  • Assigns tasks and supervises student employees.
  • Trains student employees in library catalog use, software, and general library knowledge.
  • Provides a range of services to assist the library's community and external clientele.
  • Responsible for opening and/or closing the library with student worker assistance.
  • Assists patrons with public technology and library equipment.
  • Responds to directional, informational, and basic reference queries from patrons.
  • Facilitates equal access to library services according to the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Updates and maintains patron data in the integrated library system.
  • Coordinates stacks maintenance processes to ensure proper shelving of collections.
  • Assists with maintenance of specialized equipment and places service requests for malfunctions.
  • Ensures a safe and secure library environment and contacts Public Safety for emergencies.
  • Co-supervises 40+ student employees.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 1-2 years' experience in a client-interacting position.
  • Good working knowledge of Macintosh and/or Windows environments and basic applications software.

Nice-to-haves

  • Library work experience
  • Experience with Alma integrated library systems or other DBMS.
  • Experience working in an academic setting.
  • Supervisory experience.
